The UK along with Canada has launched a global alliance of 19 countries to push for the phasing out of coal by 2030 following the COP23 climate talks held in Bonn last week. Other members of the alliance include France, Finland and Mexico. They want to have 50 countries signed up by the time of the next major UN conference in Poland. Poland is the EU’s biggest coal consumer. Canadian miners are also benefiting from high metallurgical coal prices at the moment. The USA, China, Germany, & India have not signed up yet. Germany is the biggest emitter in Europe. The UK is in the top ten of the global low carbon electricity league.
